Olofsson Bygg wins Catena’s reuse challenge for the Boozt project in Ängelholm

How far can reuse be taken in a construction project? In Catena’s 2026 expansion project for Boozt in Ängelholm, Olofsson Bygg demonstrates that a broad and systematic approach can deliver significant results. By combining several different types of reuse solutions, Olofsson Bygg has helped reduce both climate impact and resource consumption.

In Catena’s new-build projects, a competition element has been introduced – the Reuse Challenge – encouraging contractors to develop and implement the most ambitious reuse solutions possible. Entries are assessed from a holistic perspective, taking into account factors such as carbon savings, volume, functionality, creativity, and cost-effectiveness. In the Boozt project in Ängelholm, where Catena has completed an extension to an existing facility, contractor Olofsson Bygg was named the winner thanks to its strong commitment and consistent efforts to identify and implement reuse solutions throughout the project.

The work encompassed several levels of reuse. Building components from the existing structure on the property were repurposed, while products were sourced from suppliers with established circular business models. In addition, damaged materials and second-grade products were used wherever possible without compromising functionality or aesthetics.

For us, it has been important to view reuse as an integral part of the project and to continuously look for solutions that are both practical and make a real difference. This project demonstrates how far you can go when reuse is embedded throughout the entire process.

A key aspect of Olofsson Bygg’s efforts was its ability to identify reuse opportunities beyond the scope of its own contract and to maintain an ongoing dialogue with Catena on how these opportunities could be realized. This broad approach demonstrates how reuse can be integrated into project management as a natural part of the process, rather than being treated as a standalone measure.

Overall, Olofsson Bygg’s initiatives in the project resulted in an estimated carbon saving of 9,650 kg CO₂e.

“Initiatives like this provide us with valuable insights. They strengthen our efforts to develop and structure reuse practices in future projects, while also demonstrating the impact that can be achieved when multiple solutions work together,” says Rebecka Geber, Sustainability Specialist at Catena.

From Individual Initiatives to Broader Practices Through the Reuse Challenge

For Catena, reuse is part of a broader effort to develop more circular and resource-efficient construction processes. Clear requirements are set in each project to ensure that reusable building components are identified and integrated in a structured manner from the outset. The work is aimed not only at reducing climate impact today, but also at building the knowledge and experience needed to take the next step in future projects.

“We want to highlight companies that are willing to challenge established ways of working and demonstrate what is possible. That is how we drive progress together,” says Jörgen Eriksson, CEO of Catena.

By showcasing successful reuse initiatives, Catena aims to share knowledge and inspire more stakeholders to take further steps towards a more sustainable and circular construction industry.
