In accordance with our sustainability goals, we want our property portfolio to be net positive regarding biodiversity by 2030. Biodiversity means great species richness with great genetic variation. The goal poses major challenges for us. Still, we identify this area as very important. Biodiversity, together with the climate change, is crucial for the future.

Thinking through the design of the properties and plan for animals and nature already at an early stage has a positive effect on biodiversity in new construction. Even on existing properties, there are great opportunities to make room for eco-efficient space. A well-thought-out environment at the property is also a long-term quality assurance that makes the property more resistant to, for example, extreme weather.

Our tool for measuring biodiversity

With a systematic process for implementing and evaluating measures that contribute to biodiversity in an area, Catena takes the lead in the development of the logistics facilities of the future.

Catena's tool is based on a "green area factor" (GYF) calculation. GYF is a planning tool that reports the proportion of green areas in relation to hard surfaces within a property or an area and it measures and ensures that green qualities are achieved and/or preserved during construction.

Implementing and evaluating measures for biodiversity

Examples of what we do

Areas with different types of vegetation and character that we consider at our properties are pasture, wetland, woodland, grove, meadow, dry meadow, rockgarden, forest edge, erosion slope. Ponds, trenches and wetlands filter and purify water from pollution and prevent floods, erosion and drought.

We also create microclimates through birdhouses, beehives, cultivation areas, insect hotels and fauna depots.

At logistics facilities, there are often larger asphalt surfaces. They can often be better disposed and its possible to work with different types of permeable coating.

Many advantages

Systematic work with biodiversity will not only benefits the environment, a more pleasant working environment and a more attractive workplace is another result. We are taking overall responsibility as the owner of the property and can create conditions for the tenants in our properties that makes it easier for them to act sustainable.
